Mary watched them go down the hallway, then disappear into a room to the right. She heard their voices, thought they sounded very far away. She leaned against the wall, staying close to the door—and the outside. A raven cawed from a stand of trees at the back of the house. There was an immediate response as others answered the caw and began to circle. They swooped down, landing on the ground outside the door. Soon a few birds turned into six, then a dozen.

Nervously Mary reached for the doorknob, watched fearfully as the large, black birds, wings spread menacingly, came closer and closer. When one flew at her, she slammed the door closed. The sound of the bird hitting the door was terrifying. She screamed. She thought she heard the others running down the hall toward her but saw no one. The bright overhead light flashed, then went out. She screamed again and felt for the light switch, flipping it back and forth. Nothing. Birds continued to slam into the door, their beaks and claws scratching as they fought against the heavy wood. Backing up against the door, making sure it did not open, she felt the thud of birds reverberate through her body. Mary slid onto the floor.

“Mary? Where are you?” Cassie yelled. “Turn the light on? Are you okay?”

Mary yelled back, “I’m okay. The light switch won’t work. I tried.”

Suddenly the hallway was bathed in blinding light. “Found another switch,” Harry said. “These old houses have odd wiring. If you turn one switch on, it won’t work if the master switch is off. We must have flipped the wrong one down at the other end of the hall.” Hurrying over to Mary, he reached his hand out and pulled her up from the floor. “You okay?”

“Why were you screaming?” Sara asked. She put her hand on Mary’s shoulder.

“The ravens were attacking the door, and then the light went out! That’s why!” Mary shouted.

“What are you talking about?” Harry asked. “What birds?”

“The ravens. There were dozens flying outside. I slammed the door, but they kept diving and smashing into it. Damn things. I hate these stupid birds.”

“Too late for a nest. Must have food stored nearby,” said Harry. “Get back. Go on in the room down there and shut the door.” He pointed to the room down the hall that they had just come out of. “I’ll get rid of them.”

No one moved, the girls just stood there.

“Go!” Harry yelled.
